VP NOMINEES

July 17th 2008 02:49
Who Should the Candidates Pick as their Running Mates?

For the few people who may read my posts, I'm going to try and not be my normal irreverent self and discuss as a former political consultant who I think would enhance both tickets. (No promises on the irreverent comments.)

John McCain and his team are not going to let on who their choice for the second spot on the ticket is until Barack Obama names his VP. To do otherwise would announce to the world his political team are truly walking morons, which with some of his recent blunders I'm beginning to wonder. McCain needs to be able to counter with a quality pick who will bring something to the ticket that is as impressive as Obama's selection.

As far as all this vetting crap that both sides have been handing out to the media......it's done. The campaigns already know who the available choices are and they've known everything about their choices backgrounds from the very beginning. This is something a good campaign manager takes care of very early in the process. What is going on at the moment is determining who brings votes to the ticket from the states where each candidate needs help or is going to be a close race where a few hundred or thousand votes can determine the winner. And no matter what the polls or talking heads may say, as November draws nearer the possibility of a close presidential race, unless one of the candidates makes a major blunder, is front and center. Both campaigns know this and have done the scenario game trying to anticipate any and every possibility. The motto of any campaign manager is "No Surprises. Assume Nothing, Anticipate Everything!"

Barack Obama is trying to make history and become this nation's first African American president and to do this he will need support in some critical states such as Ohio and Pennsylvania where he has met resistance in the rural areas. We became aware of this in the primaries. No matter what anyone may say, the best VP Candidate for Obama is Hillary Clinton.

It doesn't matter what was said during the nomination process. What counts is that Hillary Clinton can handle anything the Republicans throw at her, even Bill Clinton. Hillary is a fighter who gets stronger in critical situations. She will also bring out the female Democratic voter and the on-the-fence independents. The rural white male voter also respects Hillary Clinton because, like George"he's almost gone"Bush, they'd have a beer with her.
Hillary also brings Bill Clinton with her and I would rather have him out there campaigning his ass off with enthusiasm than just going through the motions. He has his faults, but what he would bring to the campaign is far more important. Another important factor here is that Hispanics like the Clintons, and that is a major factor in several states that could decide a close race. Name anyone other than Hillary and some of those 18 million primary voters may go elsewhere or stay home.

John McCain's choice is very easy. He needs to name a female running mate no matter what Barack Obama does. If for some unknown lapse of political savy Obama doesn't name Hillary, or another female running mate, McCain could trump Obama with a high profile woman as his selection. He could also pull off this trump if Obama names any woman other than Hillary. Hillary supporters are very loyal and could feel jilted by the Obama campaign and just stay home. No matter what they may be telling the pollsters.
Who should McCain name?
Simple. Condoleezza Rice.
She is an African American female with an impressive background, which I'm not going into in this post. Conservative Republicans would support her because she is a true loyalist that will support anything the Party tells her to support. Whether she says she wants the VP slot or not, she would jump through hoops to be asked. And she would accept it without hesitation.
Condoleezza Rice would also cut into Obama's percentage of African American voters and female voters. She is a strong speaker and has already been vetted. She knows how to campaign and could help McCain sell himself better than any other potential VP nominee. Condoleezza also has that teflon deflection factor and is the only member of the Bush cabinet that would be acceptable to the voting public. If McCain names anyone other than Condoleezza Rice than he just stuck his head back up a large dark hole.

But remember, this is The Funny Game and candidates do stupid things!
